Brown University was Founded in 1764 as the College of Rhode Island in Warren, Rhode Island, the school registered its first students in 1765. It moved in 1770 to its present location on College Hill, overlooking the city of Providence. In 1804, in recognition of a gift from Nicholas Brown, the College of Rhode Island was renamed Brown University. The first women were admitted in 1891, when the establishment of the Women’s College marked the beginning of eighty years of a coordinate structure for educating women within Brown University. Later known as Pembroke College, the women’s college merged with Brown in 1971. The current president of the University is Ruth J. Simmons. She is the 18th president of Brown University and first African American president of an Ivy League institution. According to a November 2007 poll by the Brown Daily Herald, Simmons enjoys a more than 80% approval rating among Brown undergraduates.

Brown University was the Baptist answer to Congregationalist Yale and Harvard, Presbyterian Princeton, and Episcopalian Penn and Columbia. At the time, it was the only one that welcomed students of all religious persuasions. Brown has long since shed its Baptist affiliation, but remains dedicated to diversity and intellectual freedom.

Brown University main campus is located atop College Hill, in the East Side, across the Providence River from downtown Providence. This is the where the University was relocated in 1770 after it was first established in Warren, Rhode Island, in 1764. The main campus consists of 235 buildings and covers 143 acres 0.58 km. A salient feature of Brown's campus is that many of the academic departments reside in smaller, Victorian-era houses that the University has acquired over the years from the surrounding neighborhood.

Brown University main campus area can be subdivided further into the inner, traditional campus greens and the outer neighborhood. The two greens, the Main Green and Lincoln Field, are large grass fields perpendicular to each other. These two areas contain many of the larger and more traditional academic and dormitory buildings, including University Hall 1770. This part of the main campus is enclosed by brick and rod iron fence, with the Van Wickle Gates serving as the prominent entrance on College Street. It is this area that is featured in most publications and photographs of Brown's campus.

Outside of the gates, but still considered part of the main campus, are other University buildings and libraries that have been built at Brown over the centuries. This includes the Wriston Quad to the south of the Main Green; the John Hay Library and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library directly across the street from the Van Wickle Gates; and the Sciences Library and Thomas J. Watson, Sr. Center for Information Technology. adjacent to the Soldiers Memorial Gate. Because this area is not confined by the gates, Brown University has been able to acquire larger plots of land and construct much larger buildings as the University has expanded.

Adjacent to Brown's main campus, and further down the Hill to the west by the Providence River, is the campus of the Rhode Island School of Design. Thayer Street, which runs through Brown's campus, is a commercial district that hosts many restaurants and shops popular with students and faculty from Brown and RISD.

Brown University Campus Life and Student Services division offers a broad array of resources that allow students to extend and deepen their learning through civic engagement, cultural and religious examination, and participation in and leadership of an active network of student-initiated projects and organizations. The departments within the division of Campus Life provide a range of services to ensure an outstanding educational environment for all students at Brown. The deans, doctors, faculty fellows, coaches, chaplains and hundreds of staff in the division help students lead healthy, productive lives.

Brown University offers two different types of four-year baccalaureate degrees: the bachelor of arts  and the bachelor of science. The degree awarded is determined by a student’s chosen concentration program. Students have the option of completing two different concentrations during a regular four-year program. For example, a student with a double concentration in Physics and Music could be awarded the bachelor of science degree, and the transcript would note not two degrees but one degree having two concentrations.

Finally, select groups of first-year students are accepted to the Program in Liberal Medical Education, which they complete before entering the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown, and the Brown-RISD Dual Degree program, in which students earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and an A.B. from Brown. Students enrolled in these programs must meet certain degree requirements in addition to Brown’s usual undergraduate degree requirements.

Brown University students are expected to complete four courses each semester, for a total of 32 courses over 4 years, and, with a few exceptions, must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 30 courses in 8 semesters. Enrollment in three, four, or five courses in a semester is considered full-time. RUE students are exempted from this policy if they have received permission from the Academic Dean for RUE Students to take fewer courses and have registered accordingly by the "course-add" deadline.

Graduate study at Brown University began in 1850, but was discontinued in 1857. The more modern tradition of graduate study began in 1887, when the faculty and Fellows agreed to publish in the following year’s catalog rules for the awarding of both the master’s and the Ph.D. The first master’s degrees under the new plan were granted in 1888 and the first Ph.D.s in 1889.

In 1811, Brown first organized a medical program, which was suspended in 1827. The first M.D. degrees of the modern era were awarded in 1975 to a graduating class of 58 students. In 1984–85, the Brown Corporation approved an eight–year medical continuum called the Program in Liberal Medical Education. About half of the openings for the first-year medical class are reserved for students who receive their undergraduate degrees through the PLME. Today Brown awards some 90 medical degrees annually.

Conceived by undergraduates and ratified by the faculty, Brown University distinctive undergraduate curriculum dates to 1969–70. The curriculum harks back to a philosophy shaped by Brown President Francis Wayland. In 1850, he wrote: “The various courses should be so arranged that, insofar as practicable, every student might study what he chose, all that he chose, and nothing but what he chose.

Brown University has recently been ranked  for America's Happiest College Students, according to the Princeton Review 2010 rankings. Brown was also named "the most fashionable school in the Ivy League" by the fashion trade journal Women's Wear Daily on the basis that students on campus seem to have the strongest sense of personal style.
