The College of Fisheries - Kochi Panangad, a constituent college of the Kerala Agricultural University, is the only institution in the fisheries sector in the State imparting an undergraduate professional degree programme. College of Fisheries - Kochi is one of the 14 Fisheries Colleges in the country. It is located at Panangad, 10 km away from Cochin . The College of Fisheries - Kochi was established in 1979 . The College of Fisheries - Kochi campus with a total area of about 30 ha. has been developed steadily with necessary infrastructure facilities.
The College of Fisheries - Kochi has developed adequate competency for offering consultancy in the areas of prawn seed production, feed formulation, fish and shell fish farming, ornamental fish culture, post harvest processing and identification of shellfishes and fin fishes.The consultancy work of setting up of a freshwater prawn hatchery of 30 million capacity in Karnataka under the Department of Fisheries of Karnataka Government and another consultancy for setting up of scampi hatchery has also been taken up in the State of Gujarat .The College of Fisheries - Kochi has already established strong linkages with other institutes, viz., Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical Engineering Technology, Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture, Central Institute of Fisheries Education, National Institute of Oceanography, State Fisheries Department, Matsyafed, Agency for Development of Aquaculture, Kerala, Kerala Forest Research Institute, Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala, School of Marine Sciences, CUSAT, Department of Applied Life Sciences, M.G.University and with the Fisheries Colleges of other States.
College of Fisheries - Kochi has a well furnished computer lab funded by ICAR under the project ARIS ( Agricultural Research Information Systems) . All the computers in the campus are connected by a LAN. A fast broadband internet connection is available on all the connected computers . The library collection includes books, journals , reports, FAO publications, thesis, standard and personal collections donated by renowned scientists in fisheries science consisting of rare and valuable books, bound volumes, reprints , reports and KAU collections.Out of the 10031 books, 1954 are reference books (general and subject reference books) and 8077 textbooks on fisheries and related subjects. Journals include bound volumes and loose issues .
The College of Fisheries - Kochi library has got a very good collection of literature on fisheries donated by the late Sri. Devidas Menon, a renowned Fisheries scientist. As an expression of gratitude and to perpetuate his memory , every year, Devidas Menon Endowment Lecture is conducted by an eminent scientists, either from India or abroad. Separate hostel facilities for boys and girls and residential accommodation for staff are available within the campus. Infrastructure facilities for Basket Ball , Volley Ball , Shuttle Badminton and Table Tennis , Foot Ball , a six -track ground and a Gymnasium are available in the campus. Sports & games practices are given under the supervision of the Physical Education Teacher. Bus service for students and staff from the college to Palarivattom junction. A well-furnished guest house is available at the College of Fisheries - Kochicampus .
The 2009 All India Agricultural Research Service (ARS) examination conducted by the Agricultural Service Recruitment Board (ASRB), Govt. of India, saw excellent performance by the graduates of College of Fisheries - Kochi. Out of the total 26 vacancies of Scientists (S1), graduates of this college got selected to16 posts to work in the National Fisheries Institutes. 12 were selected under the Fish and Fisheries stream and four got selection under the Post Harvest Technology stream. The top ranks including the first rank were also garnered by our graduates.The Vocational Higher Secondary Education Department recruitment drive for VHSE Lecturers and Instructors in Fisheries by the Kerala Public Service Commission during 2008-‘09 saw excellent performance by our graduates, securing more than 90% of all the posts.
The Placement Cell could gather information on the movement of some of the alumni (old students) for the year 2009. Seven students have gone abroad for higher studies, three students for their Doctoral programmes (England, Ireland and Norway) and three students for their post-graduation in Management Studies (England). Four senior students have joined Indian Business Schools for their post-graduation (Symbiosis Agribusiness School, Pune, VAMNICOM, Pune, and FABS, Hyderabad).
