Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur originally recognized as a Government College of Ratanpur, provides higher education to the rural students of Ratanpur region in Bilaspur district. A major number of students in this college belong to the traditionally weaker sections of the society. Government College was founded on 1st of July 1989, in Ratanpur a small town about 30 kilometers away from Bilaspur. Ratanpur is a historical as well as mythological town, famous for its Mahamaya Temple. Mahamaya Temple is recognized as a "shakti peeth". Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur is named after the Mahamaya Devi. A small house was taken up on rent for the administrative office, while classes were started in 2 rooms of Government Higher Secondary School in Ratanpur. In its first academic year (1989-90) this college had only 52 students including both boys and girls. College offers different kind of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur is located at Ratanpur Dist - Bilaspur (C.G.). During the same period, initiative was taken for acquiring the Government land for Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur building and ten acres of land was provided by the District administration which is at a distance of 3 kms. from the main town. Subsequently, six rooms were constructed by the aid of the Vidhayak Nidhi (MLA Fund) on this land. From October 1996 Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur was shifted to its own premises. Later on UGC grant was received after registration under 2F and 12B by the UGC in the year 1998 and with public cooperation two more rooms were added to the main building of the college. Today, the college infrastructure includes 16 rooms, 4 laboratories and others.
In the beginning, there was only faculty of Arts up to graduation level. From 1995-96, Commerce faculty was added along with Post Graduate teaching in Political Science, Sociology & History. From 2002-03, science faculty has also been started under the Self-Financing Scheme which is still going on. Now Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur new building has been handed over so we are in our new premises. Now we are operating academic and extra curricular activities in new campus as well as in old campus. Our college is affiliated with the Guru Ghasidas University Bilaspur. Arts and commerce faculty up to graduation is permanently affiliated.
Circulation services, references service bibliography compilation and information display and notification are facilities which are provided by the college library. Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur library provides open access to students. Students are allowed to retain issued books for a fornight. There are more than 14751 books in the library of Government Mahamaya College. The library staff consists of 03 persons and one librarian one book lifter and one peon. Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur provides training for the Diploma in Computer Applications (DCA) and Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA). These computer courses at GMC used to conducted in collaboration with Dr. C. V. Raman University. Now we have introduced computer science as a subject in B.Sc. with the affilation of Guru Ghasidas University. We have got affilation for BCA also and going to start from next session 2011-2012. A full-fledged computer laboratory has been established in the college where students get hands on training.
Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur has a well-equipped physical education department headed by a sports officer. Facilities available in this department are: Indoor Games: Table Tennis, Chess , and carom Outdoor Games : Kho-Kho, Volley-Ball, Kabadhi, Athletics and Cricket. Students of Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur have shown their excellence both in state and national levels. A mini stadium in the campus of the college is nearing its completion which will add to the opportunities at the disposal of the students of this college. Weightage is given to outstanding sport persons at the time of admission as per Government rules and norms.
A mini botanical garden has been developed on the college premises under the stewardship of the Department of Botany. This garden is maintained by the students themselves. Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur students get to study in detail and at lesiure a wide variety of flora on the college premises itself. A wormi-compost pit has been prepared by the students of NSS in the college to meet the fertilizer requirements fo the college garden. This gives the students of this agriculture belt of India an opportunity to learn the techniques and processes available for organic fertilization which they can later deploy in their own farms.
Government Mahamaya College – GMC Bilaspur has two separate N.S.S. units of boys and girls of 100 students each. Apart from their regular activities, they also render other social services. Volunteers of N.S.S go the villages and educate the people regarding the prevailing vices among them. During Ratanpur mela and Navratri, the N.S.S. students work as volunteers to control traffic and man the first aid centers. They also provide drinking water to the pilgrims.
