James Cook University - JCU Mackay is named after the British sea captain James Cook who popularised the discovery and potential colonial value of the east coast of Australia and whose exploratory vessel HM Bark Endeavour ran aground for repairs in North Queensland.
After being proclaimed on 20 April 1970 as an Act of Queensland Parliament, The University College of Townsville became James Cook University of North Queensland on 29 April 1970. The official opening of the University was conducted by Queen Elizabeth II. On 1 January 1982, James Cook University - JCU Mackay amalgamated with The Townsville College of Advanced Education located adjacent to the main campus in Douglas. The university established a presence in Cairns in 1987 and moved to its current location in the suburb of Smithfield in 1996. On 1 January 1991, the School of Art and Design of the Townsville College of TAFE was transferred to JCU. The current name of James Cook University became official on 1 January 1998. In 2003 the University opened an international campus referred to as JCUS in Singapore. James Cook University - JCU Mackay further expanded its presence by establishing another campus in Brisbane, Queensland in 2006.

James Cook University - JCU Mackay main campuses are located in Townsville and Cairns in northern Queensland. Smaller study centres are located in Mackay, Mount Isa and Thursday Island, and research stations and other sites are spread around northern Queensland. The new James Cook University - JCU Mackay Education and Research Centre (MERC) located at the Mackay Base Hospital is now operational. The centre accommodates the teaching of our Social Work degree and provides a larger facility for medical and dental clinical placements. Located about halfway between Brisbane and Cairns, Mackay is a coastal city of over 78,000 residents. It is the largest sugar producing area in Australia and home to several sugar mills, one of Australia’s four sugar refineries and the largest bulk sugar terminal in the world. The city is also a vital service centre for the mines of the nearby Bowen Basin, which produce 85 per cent of the state’s coal. Beef cattle and tourism are also important industries. Mackay has relaxed, tropical lifestyle that combines the facilities of a modern regional city with an array of natural wonders. The Great Barrier Reef and fantastic fishing and scuba diving are on the doorstep. Spectacular mountain regions with crystal-clear streams, rainforests and unique flora and fauna are an easy drive away.

They are available for use under controlled conditions. Items are carefully selected for inclusion in Special Collections and fall into the categories of Archives; Theses; Rare Books; Ephemera and The North Queensland Collection. James Cook University - JCU Mackay Special Collections collaborates with other collecting agencies to ensure that rare or valuable materials are held in the most appropriate place. The Library has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Townsville Library Service and Thuringowa City Libraries and an agreement with the libraries of the Northern Territory University and the Central Queensland University.
