Womens College – Kolkata was founded on 2nd July, 1937, by a group of devoted scholar under the guidance of Dr. D. L. De with a view to advancing the cause of higher education among women. The College got affiliation to C.U. on 27th April 1940. Dr. D. L. De was the Principal and Secretary of the college till his death in March 1959. Womens College – Kolkata shifted from 204, Cornwallis Street, Kolkata-6 to the present premises at P-29, Kshirode Vidyavinode Avenue, Kolkata-70003 in 1982 at the initiative of the then Principal, Smt. Hena Maitra. The college has been accredited as a B++ grade college by NAAC (National Assessment & Accreditation Council), Bangalore, in the year2007.


The Academic Session of Womens College – Kolkata extends from 1st July to 30th June. Admission will be made strictly in accordance with norms as prescribed by the Admission Committee. Students seeking admission from Board / H.S. Council must produce their examination certificates, mark sheet, certificates of age and a migration certificate (where necessary) in original.


Womens College – Kolkata focus on to impart institutionalized courses of education, To provide students with vocational and job-oriented courses like Basic Computer Training and other courses, To provide campus placement through different career development courses, To develop the socio-cultural aspects of the personality of the students Seminar and Club activities and To develop personal and humanitarian consciousness which help to draw out the best of their inherent abilities.


Besides of its Womens College – Kolkata wants to groom the students residing mainly in and around North Kolkata and its suburbs, Hooghly, Howrah and North 24 Parganas in all round activities, to encourage activities through several workshops and seminars related to women empowerment. Music is taught as a subject offered in the General Courses, Student from other college opting for music as an elective subject are allowed to attend classes in the Womens College – Kolkata with permission of the University of Calcutta. This is the only college in north Kolkata offering this facility.


Seminars and symposia are held in the Womens College – Kolkata on regular basis where students take active part. Eminent personalities are also invited occasionally to speak on various topics which generate enthusiasm among all. There are number of clubs in the college performing different activities. These are Nature Club (Mrittika), Sports Club (Krirangan), Dance Club (Payel), Music Club (Ragini), Drama Club (Rangamancha), Debate Club (Jouktik), Handicrafts Club (Srishti), Literary Club (Bhabna). Students must join these clubs to enrich themselves in co- curricular activities.


Womens College – Kolkata organizes regular health check-ups and medical camps for all the students of the college. The college covers its students under the student safety insurance policy Scheme introduced by the New India Assurance Company Limited. All Students automatically become members of the Students' Health Home, Moulali. Students are advised to visit the Home in case of illness, with the college Fee book. Needy but meritorious Womens College – Kolkata students are provided with financial assistance from this fund. Arrangement of Transport concession is provided by the college for the benefit of the students.


Womens College – Kolkata has started a National services scheme(NSS)In which the students of the college have successfully participated as volunteers in numerous social activities like social surveys of slum areas, setting up of medical centers, sanitation drives, adult education programmes for the weaker sections of the community, organizing campaigns for eradication of social evils. The scheme helps the students to develop a scene of social and civic responsibility.


They will also be awarded certificate of honor which will brighten their future prospects. Womens College – Kolkata NSS unit has stood second this year among the colleges in Kolkata under the Calcutta of University. College offers different kind of Bachelor, Master and Post Graduate Diploma courses leading to arts group.
