St Bedes College, a women's college located in a scenic terrain at Shimla Himachal Pradesh has a long and distinguished history. It has just crossed a century of its existence. It was founded in 1904 as a Teachers' Training College by Mother Clare. The components of a general college were added to it after independence, and its affiliation was transferred to Himachal Pradesh University in 1970. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission under 2f (07-1970).
St Bedes College had its humble beginning in 1904 as a Teacher’s Training College. It would seem pertinent to mention here that the history of St. Bede's would be incomplete without at least a passing mention of “Chelsea”, which is an integral part of our campus amongst other things. The school was first founded as an orphanage for the children of British soldiers in 1864. The extensive and ideally situated “Chelsea” estate was purchased in course of time and the other (existing) management was entrusted to the Religious of Jesus & Mary.
All was not easy however. Mother Clare won a hard (and long-drawn) legal battle with the authorities and the local administration. St Bedes College was formally opened in the summer of 1904. From this day on, St. Bede’s and Chelsea combined to work earnestly for the development of education in India. The period of World War I did not seriously affect the educational aspect of life in Punjab. However, the day was dawning when the peaceful security would end. India had openly and overtly launched its campaign for freedom and there were already visible signs in the horizon indicating that the campaign would not be won without sorrow or bloodshed.
Despite the turmoil, St. Bede's and Chelsea saw through the times with courage and fortitude. It was known in town that the nuns had Muslim pupils – the anxiety was at its climax'. However, under military protection, quietly at dawn one morning, a party was sent to Pakistan. Later, they heard with relief of their safe arrival at Pakistan.
The infrastructure of the St Bedes College competes with the best in India. Cyber Café, Computer department, Recreation Room, Sports facility for Basket Ball, Badminton, TT etc. and an Auditorium with a capacity of 1000 seats make St.Bede's an institution to be reckoned with. St Bedes College provides residential facilities to 200 students. Academically the college has won laurels and a consistently high percentage of pass in the University examinations. The college caters to the needs of the student's development for wholesome growth of the self and the country.
St Bedes College provides separate hostel accommodation for boys and girls are provided. Hostel and messing expenses month wise will be borne by the students. Students on campus and at hostel are expected to maintain a high sense of dignity, poise, responsibility and harmony at all times. Peer mentoring by the senior batches towards junior batches are supervised by assigned faculty for care and support. Mess facility also provided by the college with no profit no loss. A church has been set up with in the campus for the prayer.

The Library has evolved over the years and is today recognized as one of the premier college libraries in Shimla incorporating the latest technological innovations to make it user friendly and eminently accessible. In this era of knowledge revolution, every. Bedeian (Faculty and Student) has the latest knowledge and information at her fingertips and the users benefit from various services such as introduction of computerized management of library operation, computer based retrieval of information, computer networking, e-mail, and internet. Training the faculty and students to use the electronic resources in their courses, is also critical to the efficiency of the library. The access to the Web and new technology has helped the faculty and students to get information fast.
Computer lab also set with in the St Bedes College for the computer education. Besides of it college offers more facilities like that Language Lab, Restrooms, Medical room, Scholarships, Counselling Cell, Laboratories and so more.
Ever expanding the frontiers of knowledge, St Bedes College offers regular UG courses in Arts, Science, Commerce; Honours in English, Economics and Geography; B.Sc (Hons) in Bio-Technology and Microbiology; B.B.A, B.C.A, and also PG courses like PGDCA, M.A. in English . MSc in Dietetics is offered through IGNOU.
