St Edmund College, often known as SEC, is the oldest college in Shillong, Meghalaya, India. It is an educational institute of the Congregation of Christian Brothers. It was established in 1924 and celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in 1999.
St Edmund College-SEC is located in Laitumkhrah Road. It has a green, sprawling campus with lots of buildings and sports facilities. The buildings in the campus includes the main college buildings, principal's office, library, counseling hall, Juvenate, Scholastic ate, Chapel, School building, and some others. The sports facilities include a number of football and cricket grounds, basketball courts, volleyball court, and a squash court.
The St Edmund College-SEC campus has abundant greenery, with lots of trees and shrubs, which are well-maintained by its support staff. It also boasts of numerous flower gardens and lawns, as well as green houses. Edmund Ignatius Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers, began his first school because he believed that education was the best means of making the poor in Ireland aware of their human and spiritual dignity as children of God. St. Edmund's, the first college to be set up in Meghalaya, was established in 1924. SEC celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in 1999. Over that period the College has endeavored.
St Edmund College-SEC gives us a great pleasure to inform you that our college is under the Biotechnology Information system Network (BTIS-NET) funded by the DBT, Govt. of India. Bioinformatics is conceptualizing Biology in terms of molecules and applying "informatics techniques" (derived from disciplines such as applied mathematics, computer science and statistics) to understand and organize the information associated with these molecules, on a large scale. It explores new ways for approaching biological problems and aims at the comprehension of basic principles of Biology. Bioinformatics interacts strongly with modern structural, molecular and environmental biology, as well as with pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry.
The St Edmund College-SEC provides excellent Hostel accommodation with homely care amidst pollution-free and extremely safe surroundings to the students. A refundable security will have to be deposited at the time of admission by the applicant. The Hostel security deposit(s) are subject to revision upon the arrangement made with the caterer and market position per month at present. The institute runs hostel occupants will have to follow the rules and the conditions imposed and framed from time to time.
The St Edmund College-SEC boasts of a multi-purpose Auditorium with a seating capacity of approximately 1000. It is tastefully decorated with all the basic features of a modern auditorium, such as good sound system, large stage, proper lightnings, etc.
St Edmund College-SEC has a 100-seat Audio-Visual room complete with all facilities such as LCD projector, computers, P.A. System and Overhead Projector (OHP). Seminars and Workshops etc. are carried out in this room. It is also used as a class room whenever AV aids are required for teaching. Besides the main AV room, most of the departments have their own LCD projector (with computer) and OHP's to aid in their teaching.
St Edmund College-SEC old canteen is the original canteen that has been operational as long as the college has been in existence. It is located at the heart of the campus, right in front of the Principal's office. There are separate sections for students and teachers. New canteen was inaugurated in 2008. It has a very spacious layout and tastefully furnished. Apart from Indian, Chinese and Fast Food, it also serves Khasi cuisine. The Cafeteria of SEC serves coffee and snacks. It is centrally located adjacent to the Principal's office, in the Students' Park.
The preparation for the gym site and facility began in the year 2009. The old library of St Edmund College-SEC was selected as the place where the new gym would come up, primarily because of its size (approx 3000 sq. ft. area) and its location. The entire area has wall-to-wall carpeting and big-sized mirrors are fixed on the walls to give an even more spacious look.
The St Edmund College-SEC Gym is open only in the afternoons and the facility is open to all students, both boys and girls. A qualified Gym Instructor and a Helper have been appointed to coach the students. Currently, more than a hundred students have enrolled themselves in the Gym, along with a few teachers.
The NCC unit of St Edmund College-SEC is under 42 Meghalaya Signal Company NCC, which is situated within the college campus. Land for constructing this unit has been leased by the college to the government. The unit has a full time Commanding Officer with 5 Physical Instructors, 4 office and 4 allied staff and two Associate NCC Officers. The present allotted strength of college unit is 100. The NCC cadets besides receiving NCC training at the unit serve as an organized work force in all college activities.
The St Edmund College-SEC offer comprehensive degree programs in Arts, Science and commerce with majors in different subjects. Initially, SEC was a boys' only college. Recently, it has become a co-ed with seats available for girls in Higher Secondary (Commerce) and all the Degree Courses. Higher Secondary (Arts and Science), though, still offers seats for boys only.
