Assam Engineering College-AEC was established in 1955, the first under graduate engineering college in North-Eastern India. It started with Civil Engineering, and within a few years other departments came into existence. Currently, it awards Bachelor's degrees in eight different engineering disciplines and Master's degrees in Computer Applications, Civil Engineering and Industrial and Production Engineering. There are PhD programs in Soil Mechanics and Hydraulics. Its annual festival called the "Pyrokinesis" attracts students from the entire region. With a well spread out lush green campus, Assam Engineering College-AEC has been the hub centre of many intellectual and extracurricular activities in Assam for almost half a century.
Assam Engineering College-AEC is situated at Jalukbari in South-West Guwahati, which is a landmark place in the colourful and chequered history of Assam. Bounded by the Gauhati University on the north, the Deepor Beel on the south, the Government Ayurvedic College on the east, and the Assam Police Radio Organisation on the west, Assam Engineering College-AEC spells a magical impact on the visitors. Well connected to the major city centres by open and wide roads, the College campus is about 9 km. away from the Guwahati Main Railway Station, 5 km. from the Inter-State Bus Terminus and 8 km. from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Borjhar.
In all there are 9 hostels of which eight are for under graduate students (seven for males and one for females) and one for post graduate students (males). Each Hostel is self-contained with amenities such as a common room, a library, an indoor games room, a lounge and a dining hall with mess. All rooms are provided with internet access as well. The administrative head of each hostel, the Superintendent, is a senior faculty member. There are Hostel Committees at the Hostel level. The Hostel Committee of each hostel is composed of Superintendent and a student body of Block Monitors, Mess Secretaries, Sports Secretary, Cultural Secretary, Magazine Secretary, Welfare Secretary and Auditors. The committee is an exercise in self-governance and a successful one.
Assam Engineering College-AEC offers Bachelor courses (BE) on the fields of Electrical engineering,Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Sc. & Engineering., Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering., Industrial & Prod. Engineering., Instrumentation Engineering. & Mechanical Engineering. It also offers Masters courses on Computer Application (MCA), Computer Sc. & Engg (ME), Civil Engineering (ME), Industrial & Prod. Engineering(ME). It also offers Ph. D facility in Soil Mechanics & Hydraulics. All the courses are affiliated to Gauhati University, the educational hub of the entire North-East region.
Pyrokinesis, the annual national level technical cum cultural festival of Assam Engineering College-AEC is very popular among all academic institutions of the north east in the last couple of years due to its unique composition and fostering of co-operation among the participating institutions. Pyrokinesis may, etymologically, mean something like "moving fire" or "setting things ablaze". 'Pyrokinesis' has multiple meanings. It may mean the confluence of thoughts which results in a new way of thinking, or the birth of a new concept, it may also mean resurgence or just human energy. In the end, it is up to the individual to embrace his/her perception of 'Pyrokinesis'. The three day long event showcase the various technical and cultural extravaganza.
Assam Engineering College-AEC Training & Placement Cell (TPC) of the College, which existed in paper for quite long, was rejuvenated. The Cell initiated interaction with various organizations and industries to impress upon them and organize Campus Recruitments in AEC. Assam Engineering College-AEC the early Nineties TPC became a vibrant place in AEC with students placed for Summer Training every year in reputed organizations; and companies including AEC in their annual agenda. Since 2002, the Assam Engineering College is operating from the Chemical-cum-Administrative Building Complex of AEC with its own communication set-up. The Assam Engineering College-AEC Alumni Association, Ex-AECIANs and present students have contributed towards the acquiring of essential gadgets and maintenance of this Cell, besides token support from AEC authority.
Assam Engineering College-AEC Cell is not just concentrating on offering jobs to the students; it has put serious efforts to improve the quality of the students by organizing short trainings, motivational talks, one-day-seminars etc through experts in these fields. Assam Engineering College-AEC been also constantly arranging training facilities for almost 300 pre-final year students every year. This cell is helping other engineering colleges of the region in the form of allowing students from Jorhat Engg College, NIT Silchar and NERIST (Nirjuli, Arunachal Pradesh) to attend Campus Interviews here. Due to communication problems, many companies don’t visit these places. On their request the present TPO is freely providing this facility to other technical & general institutions. Organizing technical seminars, group discussions, awareness programs, pre-placement talks, inviting prominent people to AEC has been another hallmark of the Cell.
