VIT University - Vellore was founded under section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, Government of India, New Delhi. VIT University was founded in the year of 1984 as a self-financing institution known as Vellore Engineering College (VEC).

VIT University - Vellore is located at Vellore in Tamil Naidu, India. The campus of VIT is spread across a vast area of 250 acres. A striking feature of the University is the well-planned and comprehensive infrastructure. The newest technologies are provided in the computing centers with 55 servers and over 1000 computers. VIT’s Library is housed in a 25,000 sq.ft centrally air conditioned building. It has more than 40,000 books, 4,400 back volumes of scientific and technical periodicals and extensive non-print learning resources. The library also subscribes to 300 specialized journals, both Indian and International.
VIT University - Vellore enhances the overall educational experience of students through a wide range of extra-curricular programmes, facilities, services and activities. These events provide students and other members of the university exposure to various social, cultural, intellectual, recreational opportunities and challenges. VIT University’s research strength spans over various disciplines like CAD/CAM, Rapid Prototyping, Manufacturing, Product Design, Energy, Biomedical Research, Information Technology, Nanotechnology, Optoelectronics and Materials Engineering. It expands to research in basic sciences, applied sciences and biosciences also.
The various schools affiliated to VIT are: School of Computing Sciences, School of Electrical Science, IT Business School, International Relations Office Department, Controller of Exams etc.
VIT University - Vellore offers 18 undergraduate and 32 postgraduate programs which includes a 5-year integrated MS-Software Engineering program also. In addition, it offers research programs leading to M.Phil., M.S. by research and Ph.D. degrees. These programs are accredited by national agencies such as NBA (AICTE), NAAC (UGC) and Institution of Engineers.
