Ken Allen was a Bornean orangutan (a species of extant great apes), who was given this name at the San Diego Zoo. The ape was nicknamed "the hairy Houdini" and was famous for making many successful escapes from his enclosures. He was so famous that he had his own fan club and his story was listed as one of the Top Ten Zoo Escapes by the Time Magazine in 2011. Ken Allen's life was intentionally ended in 2000 in-order to relieve him from the pain and suffering due to the cancer he had developed.
