Bharath University is a private university in Chennai, India. Bharath University known as Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research was established with the aim of imparting higher knowledge in Science and Technology to the aspiring boys and girls so that they can emerge as competent scientists, engineers and technologists of repute. Bharath Institute of Science and Technology-BIST was started in the year 1984, the institute was awarded the deemed university status by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India in 2003 and hence the name was changed to Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research. In September 2006, it was renamed as Bharath University as per a new decree issued by the University Grants Commission enabling deemed universities to change their name to 'university'. Some of its technical courses have been accredited by All India Council for Technical Education. The programmes offered by the Institute have already placed it on par with some of its counterparts, both at home and aboard.
The institute has earned over the years an enviable reputation for excellence; thanks to instruction by the highly qualified academics of distinction, staffing the various faculties. Bharath University chooses to lay special emphasis on ensuring that its graduates are ready for the technical challenges of an information society. There are a number of computing facilities available on the college campus. The computer lab houses computers and is generally available during working hours only. Additionally there is a separate lab operated by the MCA Department. The state-of-the-art facility features hardware software that is geared to specific academic programmes.
The computer labs provide a mix of software and platforms including Macintosh, MS-DOS Compatibles, Oracle 2000 with Developer Suit, Java, Visual Studio, Unix SCO open server and other high-end application software. Provision is also made for power performance, graphical and multimedia.
A meaningful leisure time in one's college life is the time spent in Library. Library is the temple of learning as observed by our elders. Reading, Referring and Researching make a person more knowledgeable. Bharath University library offers a wide range of learning resources. The library has a collection of books around 75,000 and subscribes to 80 periodicals and journals, both National and International. The service is fully computerized. Computer terminals are available for searching the library catalogue and for making reservation for books. Digital library facilities and CD-ROMS on periodicals and books and audio-visual materials on a variety of study areas are available. Air-conditioned study room with reference books makes the library reading a pleasure.
All the Institutions of the group are provided with spacious buildings to accommodate reception, office and classrooms, staff-rooms, drawing halls, laboratories, workshops, libraries, computer centers, auditoriums, conference halls, examination halls, recreation centers for staff and students, sports rooms, dispensaries, canteens, hostels placement cells etc. There are separate Under-graduate and Post-graduate blocks.
Bharath University offers Bachelor, Master and Ph.D programme in various field such as Architecture, Automobile Engineering, Bioinformatics, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology, Information Technology, Instrumentation Engineering, Management Studies, Mechanical Engineering, Science and Humanities, and M.Tech - Hydraulics and Water Resources.
