Dr BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology - Port Blair was established in the year 1984 with the conventional branches of Engineering Civil, Electrical and Mechanical. Subsequently another Polytechnic i.e. Second Govt. Polytechnic was started in the year 1989 in the same campus with Diploma in Electronics & Communication, Fisheries Engineering and Fishing Boat Skipper and Trade Diploma Courses in Hotel Reception and Book Keeping, House Keeping and Cookery.
In 1997 a Post Diploma in Computer Applications was started in Dr BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology - Port Blair followed by Diploma in Computer Engineering in the year 1998. In the year 2003 two more new courses Diploma in Information Technology and Diploma in Hotel Management & Catering Technology were introduced. In 2004 Post Diploma in Marine Engineering was also introduced. The courses of both the Institutes are approved by AICTE and affiliated to the Board of Technical Education, Delhi up to 2002 and their after affiliated under Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE), Mumbai.

It is located over 18.87* hectares of land at Pahargaon inundated by exotic flowering species. Dr BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology - Port Blair Campus accommodates staff quarters, separate hostels for girls and boys, gymnasium for the fitness of the students, gardens and in addition to this well designed college building with fully equipped laboratories and workshops. Canteen facilities are available within Dr BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology - Port Blair campus for students and staff .The canteen is managed and supervised by the Canteen Committee consisting of students & staff. To cater the needs of staff and students of the Institution, a Consumer is organized for all the staff and students. Presently the co-operative society is supplying books, drawing instruments, grocery and other stationary items. To meet any sort of accidents, which may occur during conduct of practical or any reason thereof, a full time Pharmacist is also employed.
Dr BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology - Port Blair provides placement facility. The Training & Placement Cell acts as a facilitator and organizer for various training activities pertaining to staff and students and placement activities pertaining to the students. The Training & Placement Cell also handles the Continuing Education Programmes of the Institute and various activities concerning the Industry – Institute Interaction programmes. Presently the Alumni activity is also being monitored by the Training & Placement Cell. The training cell is backed by the Audio visual wing, which gives infrastructural support to various training activities. It is well equipped with all basic training aids.
