Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman was founded on the 9th August, 1965. The college campus, covering an area of 7.3 acres was donated by Guskara Purnananda Public Institution. It is situated close to the banks of the river Kunur. Guskara, Galsi, Mongalkote, Ausgram and Bhatar constitute the catchments area of the college. By virtue of road and rail communications, a large number of students from such far-flung areas as Chittaranjan, Asansol, Durgapur Katwa, Kalna, Memari, Bolpur and Arambag flock to Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman for pursuing their studies leading a Bachelor's degree in various disciplines. Bringing the fruits of higher education to an agrarian belt has been a primary aim of the college since its inception. No wonder then that a sizeable section of the students of the college are first generation learner belonging to scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and minority (Muslim) communities. Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman offers undergraduate course in Arts, Science and Commerce. At present there is provision for teaching sixteen subjects out of which fourteen are at the honours level and the rest are at the level of pass course.
Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman is situated at P.O. Guskara, P.S. Ausgram Dist. Burdwan. The college library is well equipped to cater the needs of the students. It is a two-storied building having floor area of 4500 sq.ft. (approx.). This library building has been constructed with the help of UGC grants under Xth Plan period. The library has a total collection of more than 29000 titles. Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman has also a comparatively small library functioning in the morning shift of the college. The library subscribes some journals. The process of computerization has recently been started. There is also a reading hall. Five science departments separately run seminar libraries. There is also the provision of book-bank facility to the needy and meritorious students. Students are also allowed to enjoy overnight issue of books. All students are required to return the books before the test examination.
Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman has two hostels: one 'Vivekananda Chhatrabas' (the boys' hostel) for SC/ST boys and the other 'Nivedita Chhatrinibas' (the girls' hostel) for girls students with 40 and 60 seat capacities respectively. Students who need hostel accommodation are required to apply separately for the same during or just after admission. Scheduled caste and scheduled tribe students are given highest preference during allotment of seats of the boys' hostel. If any seat(s) remain vacant, it is usually filled up out of the general caste student applicants giving appropriate weightage to merit and distance from residence to the college. However generally we try to give higher preference to the honours course students over general course students.
Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman has established a health unit for the preliminary treatment and health check-up of students and staff of our college. It was situated at the close proximity of the Botany Department. The local famous physicians like Dr. K. S. Roy, Dr. S. K. Das, Dr. H. D. Mondal and Dr. S. Ghosh generally attend the unit. Each doctor visits the unit once in a week, preferably in Monday every week.
Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman is famous for its high tradition of sports and games. Sports are conducted under the aegis of the Physical Education Department of the College. The department runs a three-year UGC-accredited degree course in Physical Education. The department admits 40 students every year. Students play and practice in the adjoining Football ground, Handball ground, Basketball court, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, throwing and jumping pits, track and field meets etc. Each year, a large number of students represent the college in the inter-college and inter-university meets comes out with flying colours.
Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman believes in the motto of 'Men sana in corpore sano' – a healthy mind in a healthy body. Based on this principle a gymnasium is housed in the college premises. The gymnasium remains open four days a week – Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The working hours are 6.30 – 9.30 am and 1.30 – 5.30 pm. The gymnasium can accommodate 100 students per year, of which 70 seats are reserved for internal and 30 are reserved for external students. The students enjoy modern facilities like 16 stations Multigym which includes Bicycle Argometre, Treadmill, Jogger, Twister and Dumbbells.
Students of Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman regularly perform outstandingly in various cultural activities. Students' Union has a cultural committee and teachers are also involved in the activities of that committee. Almost every year the students of this college participate in various cultural competitions and get prizes or awards for their performances.
National Service Scheme is basically an education extension programme. It is associated with various types of social works like social forestation, removal of garbage, adult and continuing education, organisation of blood donation camps, development and maintenance of medicinal plant garden etc. Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman has two units of NSS. All students are encouraged to associate themselves with NSS activities of the college. The college tries to impart value education through NSS and NCC activities. Regular seminars and camps are organised. In the year 2004, a National Integration Camp funded by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs was organised by the NSS Unit of the college.
Guskara Mahavidyalaya – Bardhaman boasts of having an active NCC Unit. A unit for the girls' students has also been opened. The NCC cadets observe all important events like college foundation day, Independence Day, Republic Day, Netaji's Birthday etc. in the college. The cadets of this Mahavidyalaya regularly get chance to participate in the Republic Day Parade in Delhi. All students are free to join the NCC Unit of the college.
