Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research - PGIMER Chandigarh is a Autonomous Institution, Deemed University. Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research was founded by late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, then Chief Minister of Punjab, the college started functioning in 1962. Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the hospital associated with the College, now named ‘Nehru Hospital.’ The College was started as a center of excellence which would endeavor to develop patterns of teaching in postgraduate medical education. The aim of the Institute is to produce specialists in several disciplines of medicine.
