SDM College - Uttara Kannada was founded by MPE Society in 1964, to impart much needed higher education in this part of Uttara Kannada district. The college came into existence under the leadership of the founder Principal Dr. V. Seetharamaiah, popularly known as VeeSee in the literary circles. VeeSee was a renowned Kannada poet and critic, an educationist and effective administrator. Hence the college was known as VeeSee’s College all over the state. SDM College - Uttara Kannada is situated at Prabhat Nagar Honavar Karnataka.
The dual leadership of Dr. VeeSee and the founder president Shri R.S. Hegde could attract support from many quarters. The Government of Karnataka sanctioned 50 acres of land. A Building was constructed there and SDM College - Uttara Kannada was shifted to the new building in the year 1968. Since then the student strength went up by leaps and bounds. Gradually a few more buildings were constructed and that became the college campus.
SDM College - Uttara Kannada offers different kind of undergraduate and add-on courses. The institution has grown into a model college over the years, with the disciplined students and the dedicated staff. It has set an example to other institutions in and around Uttara Kannada district. Most of the teachers work even during the holidays and vacations and the students are also equally hard working and have gained laurels to the college by winning in various competitions in the field of arts and sports. The management is giving fee concessions and scholarships to the outstanding talented students. The staff members also are felicitated for their worthy contributions and achievements.
SDM College - Uttara Kannada Campus is situated on the National Highway 206. It is a wide campus of 50 areas comprising greenery, Playground a number of buildings etc. The building include Principal’s chamber, staff room, office, lecture halls, library, indoor stadium, canteen, students consumer cooperative society gymnasium, P.U. College, NCC and NSS offices, pump house, hostel, toilets etc. There is a spacious play ground catering to the needs of various games. There is a big open air theatre amidst the College campus. The campus having good accessible road has a parking lot in front of the entrance of the college. The campus, away from the common din, has a secured and good learning atmosphere for the students.
SDM College - Uttara Kannada library has a proud collection of 17,111 titles and 42,774 volumes. All books in the library have been computerized with e-lib software. A good collection of reference books like Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, Year-Books, Gazetteers are there on the shelves. The library contains the books donated by the dignitaries like Padmashree Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, Late Sri M. S. Hegde (Retd. Judge), Late Prof. G. S. Avadhani, Prof. V. S. Bhat, few past students of our college and also parents. The library subscribes to 85 periodicals (including two international) and 13 dailies. Books have been classified according to colon system. Books are kept subject- wise in one sequence and CDs of some books and journals are available. Books are catalogued subject wise in separate registers for the convenient and easy reference.
There was a longstanding demand for Ladies Hostel as there has been an increase in the number of girls in the student roll of SDM College - Uttara Kannada . It was a great difficulty for the girls coming from remote villages to attend classes in time. Having noticed this inconvenience, our Management has constructed a well furnished Ladies hostel in the year 2006. This Hostel is being constructed with the UGC assistance. About 50 ladies are accommodated in the hostel. There is a Warden to take care of the wards in the hostel.
A standard playground of 400 m. track is situated in SDM College - Uttara Kannada campus. The students can participate both in outdoor and indoor games. There are two volleyball and Ball – Badminton courts open for the outdoor games. Students can play cricket in the spacious playground. There is a huge indoor stadium which houses some indoor games facilities. There are 2 boards of Table tennis, 2 courts of shuttle badminton and a court of volleyball.
Canteen facility is also available in the premises of SDM College - Uttara Kannada for the benefit of both students and staff of the college. Canteen provides the food at concessional rate. Fresh, clean and hygienic snacks and meals are provided in the Canteen. A separate Vehicle shed is provided in front of the college for the benefit of the students. Two wheelers like bicycles and motorbike can be parked in the shed. 100-150 bicycles can be parked at a time. Students coming by bicycle and bike are making use of the shed.
