Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata was established in 1996, located at Baghajatin, Kolkata, has already established a size able reputation of its own, thanks to the members of the academic and administrative fraternity and the co-operation received from members of the student community. In the march of this institution to progress and fulfillment, substantial contribution had been made by the first Principal of Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata , Dr. Madan Mohan Chel, who had developed the institution to a considerable extent by introducing major courses in a number of disciplines.
The present Principal, Dr. Santiranjan Palchoudhury, is trying to follow the line set up by Dr. Madan Mohan Chel and he has already chalked out programmes for future development of the Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata , so that it can soon emerge as a strong centre of excellence in the field of higher learning in the country. With all this I have to put on record my appreciation the energy expended by Sri Kanti Ganguli, Honble Minister-in-Charge of Sundarban Development, Government of West Bengal, who is responsible for the establishment of the Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata in the area. I also appreciate the services rendered by Dr. Archana Biswas Dhar, who had functioned as the academic and administrative head of the institution in the capacity of Teacher-in-Charge during the period the post of the Principal was vacant.
The relationship existing between the members of the administrative and academic fraternity in the Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata is astoundingly deep, and the entire institution is functioning as a well-knit family, each member of which is interested in advancement of learning and emergence of the institution into a strong center of excellence.
In 1996 enjoying the patronage of local community under the leadership of some well known and renowned educationist. It started functioning from Santoshpur Vidyamandir School (Boys) – a secondary school as an evening Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata . I can well realize that the physical distance between this school at Santoshpur and the present impressive building of the Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata near Baghajatin Railway Station in small but the journey from there to here is not. I understand that it has been an arduous journey fraught with innumerable problems and very difficult challenges.
During the last 15 years of its existence of the Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata has considerably grown now having three major facilities, namely, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Commerce, offering a number of subjects at the Honors and Subsidiary levels creating to the needs of about more than 2000 students. In addition, the Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata has recently started study centers in the distance learning mode under the aegis of Netaji Subhas Open University and Indira Gandhi National Open University which will help students who have no access to formal courses. The cordial relation existing among teachers, students, administrative, laboratory and others supporting staffs appears to be a commendable feature of this Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata , which I hold, has helped the growth of the college and will be conducive to its future expansion and diversification. I come to learn that Sammilani Mahavidyalaya has been awarded B grade by the NAAC. I thank all teachers, students, supporting staffs and the Governing Body for this achievement.
Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata aims to impart education to students from all levels of the society, with special care for the underprivileged. The curricula designed for the undergraduate studies embrace and encompass sixteen disciplines. The Institution emphasizes on the principles of continuous improvement from within, which has resulted in the academic as well as infrastructural development within a short span of time.
Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata have been trying hard to meet the demands of the users by rendering different services in spite of some infrastructural limitations. Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata authority is keeping constant attention on the development of library services. The library is providing services both through ‘manual’ and ‘Information Technology’ based system. Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata are progressing steadily towards fuller automation with keeping personalized services. Even a small sapling can grow to a big tree if it is nurtured properly with love. Same thing is with the library of this college.
It came to light in 1996 in a very small way with the establishment of the Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata . With the loving care of some kindhearted teachers, staffs, part-time librarians it has almost come in proper shape with a full time library staff to look after. The librarian in co-operation and consultation with the teaching faculty selects textbooks and reference books of a particular subject and periodical. Librarian selects general reference books, general classes and supplementary reading materials.
The total number of books in the Sammilani Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata library has now gone up to 12,000 approx. Books on 16 major subjects (Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Geography, Political Science, Education, Philosophy, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Zoology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Computer Science and Accountancy & Finance) are available in the library.
