St Peters College – Ernakulam is named after St. Peter, the apostle of peace and harmony. The College derives its inspiration from St. Peter’s & St. Paul’s Orthodox Syrian Church, Kolenchery. It was in the meeting held on 9th February 1964 at this church the idea of applying for a Junior College in Kolenchery was mooted. A committee consisting of Sri. C.P. Issac (Chairman), Sri. P.M. Paily Pillai (Secretary) and Sri. C. V. Jacob (Treasurer) was authorised to proceed with the dream project. Sanction for a Junior College came through the letter No. G. C2/2879/63 dated 1-7-1964. The sincere and dedicated leadership given in the past by people like Sri. M. Chacko Pillai, Sri. K.V. Thomas, Sri. N.P. Varghese, Sri. P.M. Paily Pillai, Sri. C.P. Issac, Sri. K.E. Issac, Sri. K.P. Paulose, Sri. E.M. Varkey, Dr. C.T. George etc. had made St. Peter’s college, a reputed educational Institution.
St Peters College – Ernakulam was a boon to the rustic inhabitants of the locality. Besides producing thousands of graduates and postgraduates, uplifting the educationally backward people, the college has been the cause of ushering a new look to Kolenchery with many business establishments, banks, government offices and even a Medical College, and made it a beautiful township. The well-wishers of the college believe that the phenomenal growth of this institution is due to the invisible blessings of our Patron Saints, St. Peter and St. Paul. Ever since its beginning in 1964, the college management and the staff, through their consistent and untiring efforts, have produced citizens excelled as administrators, executives, clergymen, businessmen, doctors, engineers, lawyers and a host of other professionals. The college is now affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, and is accredited at the four star level by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of the U.G.C.
St Peters College – Ernakulam started functioning in July 1964 with five batches of Pre-Degree students. It earned a good reputation in a short span of time and its fame spread all over Kerala, and produced international sports persons and academicians, all in quick succession that the college was upgraded as a Degree College in 1967. It has the rare privilege of starting undergraduate courses in eight subjects in that year itself. The college became a post graduate institution in 1982 with the beginning of M.Sc. course in Botany. St Peters College – Ernakulam now offers Degree courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Economics, History, Politics, Malayalam, English, Hindi and Commerce, Post Graduate courses conducted in the college are Botany, Mathematics, Commerce, English, Bio-Technology, Malayalam and Tourism Administration. The college at present has a student strength of 1560. There are 103 members on the Teaching Staff and 48 members on the Non-teaching staff.
St Peters College – Ernakulam campus spreads across 25 acres of prime land in the heart of Kolenchery. Situated by the side of NH 49 (Kochi - Madurai) a mere 26 kms from Ernakulam, the College has easy access from any part of the state through road, rail and air.
Different departments of St Peters College – Ernakulam have well maintained and facilitated laboratory for students and researchers. To run the Post Graduate programme in Bio- Technology well furnished and state of the art laboratory facilities with an air conditioned area of approximately 1000 sq ft. and a total area of 4500 sq ft. have been provided. The Botany Research Centre of the College has been provided an Air-conditioned space of 1000 sq. ft for their proper functioning. This library has a prestigious collection of 39,800 volumes of books covering various disciplines, 125 journals and magazines and 300 back volumes. These collections are arranged properly by using Dewey Decimal Classification scheme.
St Peters College – Ernakulam has a fully furnished, IT enabled seminar hall of 2500 sq. ft. All seminars and work shops of the college are carried out in the seminar hall. It contains all most all facilities for the conduct of different programmes. All immediate and periodical meeting of the college staff is organised in Conference hall.
St Peters College – Ernakulam has an attractive, spacious, and fully furnished - multi purpose Indoor Stadium - 6 shuttle badminton courts, teak flooring and galleries with a seating capacity of 1500. The canteen is an integral part of the college and it is maintained along with the main building (4,000 sq.ft). It functions during the working hours and is open to all students and staff. Separate hall arrangement for students and staff is provided in the Canteen.
For "HASSLE FREE STAY", St Peters College – Ernakulam has separate hostel facilities for Men and Women students. The Men's hostel which has 26 rooms and a dormitory can accommodate 100 students and the Women's hostel with 48 rooms can accommodate 180 students. At present the "Hostel for post graduate student" (Men) has 25 inmates and the St.Mary's Hostel (Women's hostel) has 40 students. The hostel's have their own mess & mess halls, recreation rooms and study rooms.
A Central Computer Facility, Micro Computer Academy, has been set up at St Peters College – Ernakulam which runs various courses on hardware and software. The students can do add-on courses along with their regular studies as the timings are quite suited for this. The centre is open from 8 am to 8 pm and fee structure is also kept at a minimal level so that students belonging to the weaker sections too can utilise the centre. General Counselling Cell is actively functioning in the College under the guidance of Fr. O.J. Jacob. Its mission is to extend a helping hand to the needy youth. The service of a visiting Counsellor is also available once in a week. The counselling centre for girls named 'SANTHWANA' is also functioning in the College under the guidance of Ms. Annies Antony & Ms. Hema. K.R. who had been trained by M.G. University for the purpose.
