Established In: In 1976, a 55 hectare ground on Mt. Albert site became the first campus of Unitec Institute of Technology - Auckland. Formerly, it was recognised as an asylum, the WhauLuncatic Asylum. Then known as Carrington Technical Institute it got its name from its location, Carrington Road. 1987 saw a change in its name to Carrington Polytechnic. It gained its current name, Unitec Institute of Technology in 1994. Unitec soon opened other campuses. in the centre of Henderson Waitakere campus was started in 2006 and this became the second campus of the Institute. In August 2011 with a third campus in Albany, North Shore City it reached its current stature. Today it boasts of being the biggest institute imparting technology-based education in Auckland, New Zealand. With over 23,800 students in 2010, Unitec Institute of Technology is a reputed institute.


Specialty: As a member of the International Association of Universities, Unitec Institute of Technology has a novel approach to education in an attempt to make all-round development of their students a reality. It specializes in offering certificate, diploma, degree and doctorates in a number of technical subjects. Additionally, bachelors, masters and doctoral levels can be pursues in art and business centric programs. Their two-tier approach that focuses not only on postgraduate and degree-level conventional studies, but integration of those with vocational education and training gives them status as a leading educational hub. Study Centre: Unitec Institute of Technology - Auckland has a number of learning centres in their campus to encourage their various students in pursuing niche studies and furthering their growth while on campus. TePunaAko Learning Centre has a team of lecturers present, who provide students with learning advices and any sort of academic assistance. Addressing common questions and concerns, they academic reading and writing skills, stress on mathematics and statistics and even guide with English language and study skills.


An established study centre in Auckland, Unitec Institute of Technology drives their students to attain excellence. In the same light, Te Pune Ako Waitakere lecturers also help students balance study life with their other curricular activities. Hostel: Unitec Institute of Technology - Auckland believes in giving students the free choice to decide where they would like to live while studying at the institute depending on their personal preferences. They provide an on campus residential facility for convenient access to the university and to gain a community perspective. The boarding, namely the Unitec Residential Village, provides accommodation to both international students and New Zealand nationals. The Unitec Residential Valley is a vibrant place. Students can explore foreign cultures by making friends with students from other nationalities.


For students with disabilities, the unit has a suitable number of rooms with special facilities. For those students wanting to experience a level of independence Unitec suggests renting a room in a shared apartment or house in an off-campus residence. The Unitec Accommodation Office can be contacted for help with locating such a place. Unitec requires international students under the age of 18 to stay with a New Zealand family or with an approved family member. They believe this creates for the student a support system and makes their educational pursuit an comfortable experience.


Infrastructure: Mt. Albert Campus of Unitec Institute of Technology in a plush green campus located on a 55-hectare ground. It is full of trees, lawns and gardens and is 10 minutes away from the central business district of Auckland city. Courses ranging from architecture to trades and from engineering to business are taught here. Additionally, even health, sports and natural sciences programs are conducted at this campus. Since its inception in 1976, the campus has historic buildings constructed in 1850s alongside a larger mix of modern and state-of-the-art lecture theatres and laboratories. The campus is home to the Wairaka Stream and a large number of pukekos. While designing the facility it was ensured that there is plenty of parking space and the train station and bus stop are only a short walk away. Free bus shuttle services can also be availed by the students of Mt. Albert Campus. The six Pt. Chevalier shops on campus provide the perfect getaway when a student needs a break. These breaks can extend to a cultural romp with the campus hosting 3 galleries and a theatre that showcase young campus talent. With computer labs, facilities for gym or sports at the National Squash Canter and treatment for injuries at the Heath Centre or Osteopathy Clinic, a student has plenty to do with their free time. In the heart of Henderson is the Waitakere Campus catering to 2500 students. It includes an assortment of bioscience labs, purpose-built computer labs a high-tech 180-seat lecture theatre and even its own common room and kitchen facilities. Henderson’s shopping centre is a short walk from the campus.


In an attempt to integrate students with the local people, a joint library allows a fantastic learning environment. The Northern Campus in Albany allows vocational course students a large number of programs. The library here provides resources pertaining to the vocational programs being taught on campus. Thus it stocks on research material related to technology, trades, and business and even computing. Books on English language are also available.


Faculty: The lectures at Unitec Institute of Technology - Auckland include an eclectic mix of professionals and academicians.
