Centre for Development Studies - CDS Thiruvananthapuram was established in year 1971 by the noted economist Professor K.N.Raj, it is considered to be one of the foremost development economics research centers in the country. It has a faculty of about 26. The core activities of the CDS are research, teaching and training.The Centre for Development Studies - CDS Thiruvananthapuram is an autonomous research institute. Its main objective is to promote research, teaching and training in disciplines relevant to development.
Centre for Development Studies - CDS Thiruvananthapuram is located in a quiet residential area in the northwest part of the City of Trivandrum. The 10 acre campus, designed and constructed by the famous architect, Dr.Laurie Baker epitomizes his unique architectural style and cost reduction in building methods. The Centre for Development Studies - CDS Thiruvananthapuram Library is now one of the biggest in South India with over 1,25, 000 titles in Economics and allied disciplines and subscribing to about 400 professional journals.The library is in the process of being automated.
Centre for Development Studies - CDS Thiruvananthapuram draws financial support from the Government of Kerala and the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). The Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Planning Commission have instituted endowment units for research in selected areas at Centre for Development Studies - CDS Thiruvananthapuram. The Union Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has established a migration unit at Centre for Development Studies - CDS Thiruvananthapuram to study issues relating to international migration from India.
22 Pentium machines with shared printing facility. The place is mainly meant for students and project staff. This facility helps us to provide almost one machine to a student and hence we can say that our students have a personalised computing environment in the Centre.Another major service is the Library Information System. Unix-based library server is housed in the Main computer-room at the Computer Centre. LIBSYS software is used for implementation of the information system.
The 10-acre campus also houses the Library, Computer Centre, Auditoriums, Hostels, Guesthouse and Residential Units for staff members.The Centre for Development Studies - CDS Thiruvananthapuram hostels have 18 rooms in two units for women and 42 rooms for men in another two units. The rooms are well appointed and for single occupancy.The guesthouse has nine double-bedded rooms, all of which are bath attached. Currently the guest house is under expansion with six more rooms, a pantry and utility room. The refurbished and expanded guest house is expected to be ready during the course of 2008.The campus is serviced by a cafeteria, which serves simple wholesome food on Indian cuisine. The campus also has recreation facilities.Centre for Development Studies - CDS Thiruvananthapuram promotes a healthy lifestyle and fosters close interaction with the families of staff members living in the campus. A faculty member living in the campus is assigned as Hostel warden.
