Vasantdada Sugar Institute - VSI Pune formerly known as Deccan Sugar Institute was established on 19 November 1975, is an autonomous body which is a ‘Registered Society’ registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950. Vasantdada Sugar Institute - VSI Pune has been set up to serve the Sugar Industry in India in general and in Maharashtra State in particular. Established by the sugarcane grower members of the co-operative sugar factories in Maharashtra State with an active and generous support of Government of Maharashtra State, perhaps it is the only organization of its kind in the World.
Vasantdada Sugar Institute - VSI Pune mission as a R&D Organization is to bring about improvement in the socio-economic status of sugarcane grower farmers through research by providing to them new and cutting edge technologies by undertaking or helping to carry on research and other scientific work in connection with the trade or industry related to sugarcane/ sugar beet or other sugar bearing plants, sugar by-products and allied industries in India. Vasantdada Sugar Institute - VSI Pune strives for an all-encompassing progress of the Indian Sugar Industry and to achieve objectives it operates mainly through three channels namely: Academic, Extension and Research.
After an existence of over a quarter of a century, Vasantdada Sugar Institute - VSI Pune stand tall today. It has moved from strength to strength over the years and has emerged stronger tackling many challenges. The management of Vasantdada Sugar Institute - VSI Pune ests in the Board of Trustees (BoT) comprising 11 members and headed by its President, Shri. Sharadchandraji Pawar, Union Minister for Agriculture, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Vasantdada Sugar Institute - VSI Pune. All trustees are eminent personalities devoted to welfare of the farming community. The Governing Council (GC) comprising 38 members supervises and monitors various functions of the Institute and provides necessary guidance. Three sub-committees of the Governing Council members assist the Governing Council in its overall functioning. Director General (DG), Shri. Shivajirao Deshmukh is the executive head of the organization and implements the decisions of the management.
Vasantdada Sugar Institute - VSI Pune offers a multitude of academic programs – both short-term and long-term – designed to upgrade and enhance the skills of Sugar Industry personnel. These include post-graduate diploma and certificate courses in Sugar Technology, Alcohol and Fermentation Technology, Sugar Engineering, Environmental Science, Computer and Microprocessor and Instrumentation. Several short-term training programs are offered during off-season which aims at improving the competence of mangers, technologists, workers and farmers. Special need-based programs are mounted at the request of clients. Over 3000 professionals from India and abroad have so far been bestowed with VSI diplomas and certificates.
