Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences - IGIMS Patna was established on 19th November 1983, as an autonomous organization on the pattern of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The objective was to provide super specialty medical facilities in Bihar. On 27th January 1983 Cabinet approved the completion of this massive project in 4 phases within a span of six (6) years. According to the decision of State Government, 130.20 Acres of land was transferred to Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences - IGIMS Patna. It was proposed that the hospital will be completed by 1990 with a capacity to house 1000 beds. The estimated cost was 110 Crores rupees which was later revised to 133 crores.
Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences - IGIMS Patna was setup with an objective to provide the best Medicare facilities to the peoples in and around Bihar. The hospital aims to be the AIIMS of this region. So far, it has been successful in achieving part of its goal and IGIMS is acting hard to achieve its goals for the broader interest of masses. The relevant period under evaluation revealed marked increase in the number of patients attending our services. This was partly due to addition of newer services and partly due to increase in number of patients attending the preexisting departments.

Under such situation, Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences - IGIMS Patna has come out with a proposal to establish a Comprehensive Hospital Waste Management System in accordance with the provisions made in the Bio-Medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rule – 1998 for the care of hospital waste generated by Hospital / Nursing Home etc. operating from Patna municipal area as well as neighboring districts for treatment.
The specially designed Incinerator System installed at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences - IGIMS Patna is one of its kinds in the whole state of Bihar. It can incinerate waste at the rate of 200 to 205 Kegs. Per hours with combustion efficiency of 99%. It comprises primary and secondary chambers for burning of solids. The temperature of the primary chamber will be approx. 850°C and the secondary chamber temperature will be approx. 1050°C at the time of operation. The temperature recorder (Graphically) is attached to monitor the temperature during the process. The height of the stack is above 30 meters from ground for safe emission of gas residuals. The pollution control device is also attached with the system to achieve emission standards as prescribed in Bio-Medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rule – 1998. The Incinerator is being fired by low sculpture diesel.
