Madhab Choudhury College – MC College Barpeta the third oldest non-government college in undivided Assam, was established in the year 1939, when the entire India rose up vigorously against the colonial rule. The inception of Madhab Choudhury College – MC College Barpeta was a manifestation of an aspiration of a few visionaries who, imbued with the ideals of the freedom struggle, desired to contribute to building a vibrant, resurgent, progressive and enlightened India, and with modern, liberal, secular and scientific education in this part of the country. Smt. Jibanlata Choudhury, a philanthropic lady of Barpeta, came forward to help them reach their goal, and generously donated Rupees ten thousand to begin the process of establishment of this college. The untiring efforts of its founders along with public donations added to it made this pioneering academic institution in the North East India take its complete shape, and finally Madhab Choudhury College – MC College Barpeta, bearing the name of the husband of this generous lady, was inaugurated by Loka Priya Gopinath Bordoloi, ‘Prime Minister’ of the Assam as he was then called, on the 14 th of July, 1939.
Since then, Madhab Choudhury College – MC College Barpeta has been undergoing a relentless process of growing up. The college that started with twelve teachers and about thirty students has 74 teachers and about two thousand students at present. Born as and arts college, M.C. College introduced its science stream in 1959; an at present it has been able to translate its promise to provide students of this locality with apt facilities for learning in both the streams in to a reality.
In the year 2003, the National Assessment and Accredition Council (N.A.A.C.) assessed Madhab Choudhury College – MC College Barpeta and awarded it with ‘B’ grade. This assessment of the N.A.A.C. has now formed the soil in which the college desires to germinate the seeds of its future. Books thus borrowed by the students from the library are to be returned within 15 days from the date of borrowing, failing which, a fine of Rs. 0.50 per book for the first fifteen extra days, and after that, a fine of Rs. 1.00 per book per day will have to be paid. The regular affairs of the library like issue of books are computerized.

It has a colour TV to facilitate the students to watch U.G.C. programmes. Compact Discs with academic content like environment etc. are shown to the students once a week. The central library has internet facility, which can be accessed by both teachers and students free of cost during working hours. Madhab Choudhury College – MC College Barpeta has well-furnished Boys’ Hostel and Girls’ Hostel for accommodation of students. Both the hostels have an effective maintenance system, with physical and mental comforts of the boarders, suitable atmosphere for study and extra-carricular activities and sense of discipline given topmost priority.
The Boys’ Hostel of Madhab Choudhury College – MC College Barpeta is a large building with the capacity of accommodate 50 boarders. It has sufficient open spaces and other facilitities for recreational activities. Running water is available for 24 hours. Cleanliness and supply of good quality foods etc are given importanc eat this Hostel.
The two storied Girls’ Hostel of Madhab Choudhury College – MC College Barpeta has the capacity to accommodate 62 oarders. Facilities of rrecreation and provided to boarders at this Hostel too. It also has 24 hours running water. The Hostel administration always sees the cleanliness is maintained and the foods supplied to the boarders are of good quality. The Canteen of Madhab Choudhury College – MC College Barpeta is situated at a spacious building of 3000 sq. ft. at which around 100 nos. of students, teachers and other employees can feed themselves at a time.
