The need of an Pandu College – Guwahati for higher education in growing Pandu -Maligaon area was felt during early sixties by the residents of the Western part of Guwahati. A meeting for this purpose was organized on 28th January 1962 under the guidance of the Deputy Chief Engineer, Brahmaputra Bridge Project, presided over the meeting where a resolution to start the Pre-University classes in Arts & Commerce was Adopted. A committee comprising of several citizens of the area was constituted. The Pandu College – Guwahati was inaugurated on 5th September 1962 synchronising with the Teacher's Day.Classes began in the abandoned building of Netaji Vidyapeeth Rly.High School in the present site popularly known as American Colony, subsequently named as Water Works Colony, just at the foothills of the Nilachal pahar. The N.F.Rly. Authority was kind enough to allot a plot of land by a deed of agreement for construction of the Pandu College – Guwahati building.
Shri Satya Kinkar Sen, a reputed teacher of Literature was the Founder Principal of the Pandu College – Guwahati. There were about 500 students and a few part time as well as whole time lectures in the beginning.The college developed rapidly and science stream was introduced in the next academic session of 1963-64. Science stream in degree level was started in 1965-66.
This Pandu College – Guwahati has achieved a position in the annals of higher education in the state. The results of the college, from the very beginning have been encouraging and on many occasions brought laurels to it. Pandu College – Guwahati is one of the pioneering institutions in the city imparting quality education.The Pandu College – Guwahati has been accredited B+ grade by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore) in January 2004.

Pandu College – Guwahati Library is one of the best college libraries in Assam in providing efficient service to the readers. It is a place of attraction for the students. The library has been aiming to supplement the knowledge of the students, which they acquire from their teachers. Presently the library is under the control of full-fledged library staff.The library is in the main building. It is well stocked with more than 32,600 texts and reference books, more than a dozen of local and national newspapers, journals and other information sources like maps, globes, floppy discs, CD.ROMs etc. The library has a reading room for students and an space is kept exclusively to teachers.

The Pandu College – Guwahati has two hostels viz. Boys' Hostel and Girls' Hostel for its needy students Both the hostels are one of the bests among city hostels.
