Patna University - PU Patna is the 7th oldest University of the Indian subcontinent, which was established in the year 1917 to cater to the growing needs of higher education of Bihar, Orissa and Nepal. The history of Patna University - PU Patna is closely linked with the history of modern Bihar – the saga of her educational, cultural, political and economic growth. It is a hallmark in the annals of the progress of the State in particular and region in general. It is the only teaching and residential university in the populous State of Bihar. Patna University - PU Patna also has a truly national character which transcends the linguistic, cultural and political boundaries. The outstanding personalities involved in top administrative positions, well qualified learned teachers and students have largely contributed towards its rich academic heritage.
Bihar has been a seat of learning since time immemorial. The State had the Universities like Nalanda and Vikramshila that were drawing students even from neighbouring countries. One of the primary objectives of the University education is to produce trained manpower, which can accelerate sustained economic growth by harnessing science and technology.
Patna University - PU Patna has been imparting quality education to its students, which is amply reflected in the success of our students at the all India level competitions. Even today Patna University holds important positions in the Central Services Examination. In the year of women empowerment we have accorded great significance to the education of women and for that Patna University - PU Patna started commerce education in Patna Women’s College and Magadh Mahila College. Out of thirteen constituent Colleges, three of them are exclusively meant for girls and the other eight are Co-educational Institutions where the number of girl students is fairly large. Patna University - PU Patna has tried to provide benefits to the socially and economically deprived groups, handicapped students and also to the weaker sections of the society. In this regard Patna University - PU Patna has, strictly followed the reservation policy of the Government and provided those facilities so that they can unfold their potentialities and prove themselves as worthy members of the society.
Patna University - PU Patna has N. S. S., N. C. C., Sports and Fine Arts Board which keep the University humming with life all the year round with extra-curricular activities. One of our N.S.S. volunteers, Sushree Shruti Anand was awarded the Indira Gandhi N.S.S. award. Sushree Mili Sinha was awarded Gold Medal in Discus Throw in All Indian Inter University Athletics Competition at Gulbarga. Volunteers from 14 States participated in the National Integration Camp, 2003 supported financially by Ministry of Youth and Sports, Govt. of India.
Patna University - PU Patna has played vital role in India’s struggle for independence against colonial domination and also in the task of national reconstruction during post-independence period. This was the centre of nationalist and revolutionary activities. One needs to recount the services rendered by Mazharul Haque, Rajendra Prasad, Sri Krisna Sinha, Dr. Sachidanand Sinha, Anugral Narain Sinha, Jay Prakash Narayan, B. P. Mandal, Karpoori Thakur, L. N. Mishra, Baliram Bhagat, Ram Dulari Sinha, Sidheshwar Prasad and many others, all alumni of this University. The Quit India Movement of 1947 had its loudest echoes in the portels of this institution. The Total Revolution of Jai Prakash Narayan in 1974 had its support base in this University. Radhakrishnan Commission in 1949 was not happy with the idea that a premier university like Patna University - PU Patna should simply conduct examinations for its affiliating institutions. This, in fact, laid the solid foundation for making Patna University - PU Patna a Teaching-cum-Residential University of Bihar in 1952 and this character is still maintained. Despite impediments and constraints, the University has gloriously maintained its academic identity in the entire country.
At the time of its inception Patna University - PU Patna was the only University in undivided Bihar. This position continued for nearly three and half decades. Later 12 more universities were setup in the state keeping in view the regional aspiration of the people of Bihar. They all have been carved out of this parent body. It has remained a feeder for bulk of the man power for the all other universities that sprang up in the State. Many of the alumni of this university occupy top positions in running university administration both in and out of the state besides participating in quality teaching in the field of higher education.

Facilities of Patna University - PU Patna have NINE faculties, 32 P.G. Departments, and 11 Colleges. It runs Postgraduate classes in most of the subjects and some new even have been added. To mention some such courses are Biotechnology, Computer Diploma Courses, and Management Courses. Patna University - PU Patna also runs a Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) established in 1974 that aims at providing opportunities to gain higher education to those students who are employed or otherwise engaged and are unable to attend regular classes.
Central Library of Patna University - PU Patna is the largest and oldest Library of Bihar established in the year 1919 and is catering to the needs of the students, teachers and research scholars not only of the University but of other institutions also. It is located in the centre of the campus and heart of the Town. The Library has been connected to Inflibnet and steps are being taken to computerize the working. The Library has many old manuscripts and historical records. Due to insufficient infrastructure and modern facilities, the library is finding it difficult to maintain the rare volumes. The increased no of users & students have made the reading rooms too small to accommodate the readers. It is intended to modernize the Library and provide modern facilities.
Central Dispensary of Patna University - PU Patna with 12 skilled doctors having M.D., M.S., And F.R.C.S. degrees have been catering to the needs of the students, teachers and non-teaching staff of the University. The dispensary is located in a very old building and has in-sufficient infrastructure and facilities. With appointment of doctors with specializations, University contemplates to provide better and specialized facilities to the users. It is proposed to provide modern diagnostic facilities in the Dispensary along with a fully equipped Operation Theater along with other facilities. The University also proposes to set up THREE Satellite Centers to cater to the needs of students and the staff.
University Press of Patna University - PU Patna has its own Press with limited infrastructure facility and is located on the campus. It has two mono typing machines besides other related equipments and instruments. With this infrastructure it has not been able to cope up with the work and provide quality service. The building where it is located is also very in-sufficient to meet the present day demand. Patna University - PU Patna proposes to modernize the Press to be a modern one and would need support of the U.G.C.
The activities of the N.S.S. have been very much appreciated by the public. Patna University – PU Patna could mobilize resources from an MP from the State and has been able to build a small building for the office of the N.S.S. This building needs expansion and completion for which the University seeks assistance from the U.G.C.
The U.G.C. Academic Staff College is functioning efficiently and imparting orientation Programmes and Refresher Courses in various subjects for the teachers of the country in general and Bihar in particular. But the U.G.C. Academic Staff College Patna University - PU Patna is at present located in a small part of Department of Education Building in a Satellite campus in Dariyapur about 2 Km away from the main campus of Patna University - PU Patna. The space available to the college at present is inadequate. The other infrastructure facilities of the college are also poor.
