The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences - WBNUJS Kolkata was founded in 1999 by the Bar Council of India, in union with the Government of West Bengal. The founding Vice Chancellor of the university was Professor N.R. Madhava Menon, the man accredited with transforming the field of legal education in the country, by starting the concept of "law schools", as opposed to the traditional law colleges present before. NUJS is a fully independent University.
The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences - WBNUJS Kolkata is amongst the three most preferred law schools in the country. During the first two years of its being, the university did not have a permanent campus. The classes were carried out at Aranya Bhavan, a building owned by the West Bengal Government, and students stayed in government flats. On 28 October, 2002, the University's current permanent campus was inaugurated by the ex- Chief Justice of India, B N Kirpal. In 2006, The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences was officially given 5-acre plot in New Town, Rajarhat: an upscale township which is being developed by the West Bengal government.

The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences - WBNUJS Kolkata provides two integrated five- year programs, a BA, LLB (Hons) degree course and a B.Sc LLB (Hons) degree course. Admission to the university is done through a countrywide conducted admission test that is held in various cities typically on the last Sunday of January every year. To be qualified for admission, students must have finished 10 + 2 level or equivalent school education with minimum 50 per cent marks and must be below the age of 21 years on the 31st December.
Students who are presently preparing for their twelfth- standard school exams on the year of admission can also take the test. Each year 80 students are given admission in the university. Out of which, 10 seats are reserved only for SC/ST and disabled students and 10 seats are reserved only for International/NRI students. The annual tuition fee of the University is Rs 35000. The post-graduate programs offered by the University consist of a two-year LLM Degree, a research-based one-year M.Phil Degree and PhD/ LLB programmes.
The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences - WBNUJS Kolkata has a well-equipped library with books and periodicals that cover various disciplines including law, social sciences and humanities. Various schools have their own libraries that have collections in their individual specialized area of law. In addition, the University also has a Legal Services Clinic that is run under the guidance of a retired District Judge. It offers courses for clinical education of students. It also provides various legal services as well.
The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences - WBNUJS Kolkata offers different halls of residence for boys and girls. Both the halls of residence, in total, can house up to 500 students.
