The foundation of
Kakatiya University - KU Warangal on August 19, 1976 indicated the realization of a long cherished dream of the people of Telangana. The University started with only four Departments in total which were Telugu, English, Chemistry and Mathematics in 1968, Departments of Physics, Botany, Zoology, Commerce, Economics and Public Administration were added later B. Pharmacy program which was started by OU in 1974 was later moved to KU in 1975.
With the growth of jurisdictional area of
Kakatiya University - KU Warangal in 1988, there are in total 321 colleges in its fold (171 old govt. aided, private unaided degree colleges, 66 new colleges in 2005, 48 B.Ed. colleges, 14 pharmacy colleges, 3 law colleges, 3 engineering colleges, including Kothagudem Engineering College, 11 university PG colleges, 29 colleges offering MBA, and 32 colleges offering MCA). Situated in the Northern Telangana districts of Karimnapr, Khammam, Adilabad and Warangal the University provides a number of courses at the Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate and Research levels in Professional as well as Non-Professional courses.
Kakatiya University - KU Warangal is situated in the historical City of Warangal in northern Telengana of Andhra Pradesh, the University is named after the great Kakatiya Dynasty which ruled the area with Warangal as its capital during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

The University has well-ventilated classrooms with audio-video services, seminar halls, computer labs, and faculty rooms. Kakatiya University - KU Warangal Library came into being only in 1982. During the last 18 years of its being, the University Library has developed into a manifold Institute. Taking into consideration the increasing needs of the library and demands of users, numerous sections have been created to help in proper organization and maintenance of the library.
Kakatiya University - KU Warangal has 8 hostels in Warangal town with an overall intake of 800 students. However, at present there are more than 1500 students that are being accommodated in these hostels. There are 8 hostels, out of which 6 hostels are on the University Campus, while one hostel for Law College is situated at the University Arts & Science College, Subedari. One hostel for University PG College, Subedari is for the time being run in a rented building.
