Shivaji University, founded in 1962, is named after the Great Maratha Warrior and originator of the Maratha Empire Chhatrapati Shivaji. The jurisdiction of the
Shivaji University is extend over three districts i.e. Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara with strength of about 2,00,000 students who are studying in 225 associated colleges and recognized institutes.
In 1962 the
Shivaji University began to work with 34 affiliated colleges and about 14000 students with 5 Post-graduate Departments within the campus. At present, the number of affiliated colleges have gone up to 225 and students strength up to 2,00,000 with 34 Postgraduate Departments within the campus.
The authorities of the
Shivaji University includes the Senate, Management Council, Academic Council, the faculty, the Board of College & University Development, the Board of Directors, the Board of Interdisciplinary Studies, the Board of Examination, the Board of Adult & Continuing Education & Extension Services, the Students Council & other such bodies. The Barr. B. Khardekar library in
Shivaji University is one of the most important university libraries in Southern Maharashtra, India. It looks after the academic requirements of students, faculty and other user groups of university and visitors from other universities and institutes. The library has more than 3.1 lakhs printed documents and it subscribes to more than 298 national and global journals. The University has established contacts with universities, in India and abroad organizations libraries for inter-library loan arrangement.

Shivaji University is dealing with the essential parts of the students studying in the University like welfare. Mr. D. Shrikant of Sociology Dept. who heads DSW is directly concerned for making the
Shivaji University Students Council, which consist of 15 Students, President, Hon'ble V.C.and Chairman Director DSW. The DSW also makes the P.G. Dept. Students, with one student from every dept. chosen on basis of merit. Hon'ble V.C., Director DSW, Director NSS and Director Sports & Physical education are also the members of Students Council.
