Elphinstone College was established in 1856. It is one of the oldest colleges of the University of Mumbai. It is ranked as a prestigious seat of learning during the British Raj and is generally observed for its vibrant alumni. It is reputed for its alumni who were luminaries like Bala Gangadhar Tilak, Pherozshah Mehta, and Jamshedji Tata. It is further observed for having played an important role in spread of Western education in Bombay Presidency.

Elphinstone College was formally inaugurated in 1835. The Classes began in 1836, at Town Hall, with the first two professors Arthur Bedford Orlebar, Professor of Natural Philosophy and John Harkness, Professor of General Literature.
In 1840, the professors' classes were combined with the Society's High School to form the Elphinstone Native Education Institution.
Elphinstone College, as a separate institution, separated from the High School, on 1 April 1856. Therefore, 1856 is the year that is officially considered to be the year of establishment of
Elphinstone College.
The
Elphinstone College of Mumbai offers different courses in all the three streams- arts science and Commerce. The Junior College is has class XI and XII the Degree College is offers 3-year Bachelor degree courses. At the junior College level the college also offers Vocational Course in Electronics and Computers. The
Elphinstone College is also open to changes and offers some job oriented courses like B.Sc in Information Technology and Biotechnology.
Elphinstone College, like many other colleges of Mumbai, comprises of two different academic entities- Senior College and Junior College. The main college is affiliated to University of Mumbai and imparts education leading to Bachelor degrees while Junior college is monitored by HSC Board and provides higher secondary education.

Elphinstone College, with its old architecture, has been classified as a grade 1 heritage structure and is one of the most identified buildings of South Mumbai as a symbol British Raj Heritage. The
Elphinstone College building is one of the finest Victorian structures in India. It has a breathtaking architectural composition of a dynamic fenestration scheme, ordered by flanking stone turrets roofed over in tiled pyramid-shaped roofs.
Delicately articulated stone balconies, brackets and balustrades along with intricately designed surface motifs add to the decorative features of the building. With an impressive facade and skyline, it is among the select list of Grade I Heritage buildings in the city, meriting careful restoration and preservation of its historic fabric.
