Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejebhoy Group of Hospitals, had 54 students on its role in the year of 1850 and the first batch graduated in 1851. The students were graduates of Grant Medical College and not Bachelors of Bombay University, as the latter did not even exist then. In the beginning, the college seemed to have been fortunate in having, as its head, an honest, intelligent, broadminded & large-hearted pioneer and guide, in the person of Dr. Charles Morehead, for 15 years as its first superintendent and later from 1851 (when the post was re-designated) as the Principal.

Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejebhoy Group of Hospitals has postgraduate programs in all major branches. Every year approximately 130 students are admitted for PG courses. The seats are distributed by: 25% by All India entrance exam, 25% in service Medical officer's quota and remaining by State Level Entrance Exam. Yearly admissions are 18, through all India competitive exams. Annually 50 candidates are admitted to the course, which is of 3 half years duration. In addition, the College also conducts DMLT course for training technicians. There are 12 seats in total and the duration for this course is one and half years.
